What are the properties and nutritional value of coconut water?
How is coconut water made?
Coconut water is a drink that is obtained from young, still green palm fruits (unlike coconut milk, which is obtained from the extraction of fat from the pulp). The tree takes from the soil water necessary for its growth, rich in minerals. During the journey - from the roots to the crown - the fluid undergoes multiple filtration and purification, making it sterile clean. To the carton in which it stands on the store shelf, water goes straight from the coconut, in sterile conditions, without losing its properties.

Coconut water is rich in ingredients necessary for the body, such as magnesium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and C, and the level of electrolytes in it is almost identical to that in human blood plasma.

Scientific research has also shown that coconut water has a beneficial effect on the work of the heart and the circulatory system (reduces blood pressure and cholesterol, reduces the risk of atherosclerosis), has a beneficial effect in diseases of the nervous and digestive systems (it is given in the case of diarrhoea, vomiting or stomach problems) ) and urinary (reduces antioxidant stress in the kidneys, breaks up kidney stones).
Cytokinins (plant growth hormones) have an anticoagulant effect, which is important for people with cardiovascular problems. Coconut water is also credited with antibacterial, antiviral (fighting herpes and influenza viruses), anti-allergic and anti-fungal properties.
The liquid does not contain lactose or sugars, so it can be consumed, among others by diabetics or people who do not tolerate cow's milk. The content of lauric acid (an ingredient also found in breast milk) makes coconut water an ideal drink even for young children.
During World War II, during the fighting in the Pacific, when there was no blood for transfusion, the doctors saved the lives of wounded soldiers by transferring sterile water straight from young coconuts. To this day, it happens that in underdeveloped Third World countries it is given intravenously as a replacement for physiological fluid to replenish electrolytes and hydrate the body.
